Agencies can turn repeat work into data products when they own the structure and have the right to reuse the material inside it.

The sellable part is not a client's private data. It is the clean framework, method, and public or properly licensed data that can work for the next buyer.

Start With the Work You Repeat

Look for research your team rebuilds because the structure is useful across many accounts.

  • Competitor maps with the same fields for every market
  • Local business records collected with one verification method
  • Search reporting schemas that preserve dates and landing pages
  • Market research files with repeatable sources and categories

The repeated structure is the clue. Build the product around that structure instead of around one client's rows.

Four Gates Before Client Work Becomes a Product

  1. Ownership. Read the client agreement and confirm who owns the deliverable. If the client owns it, stop until you have written permission or rebuild the product from material you may use.
  2. Confidentiality. Remove client names, account details, private results, and internal methods the agreement protects. The USPTO explains that trade secrets include valuable business information kept confidential.
  3. Privacy. Removing a name may not be enough when the remaining fields can identify a person or business. NIST's de-identification guidance recommends checking disclosure and re-identification risk before data is shared.
  4. Source rights. Record where every field came from and what the source allows. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that individual facts are different from a database's original selection and arrangement.

This is product planning, not legal advice. Get legal review when the agreement or reuse rights are unclear.

Choose the Product That Remains After Cleanup

  • Reusable template: sell the field structure and instructions without client records.
  • Finished dataset: package records you collected from sources that allow the intended use.
  • Custom license: build coverage, delivery, and rights around one buyer's needs.

Use the free dataset builder to test one row, required fields, and unique IDs before collecting the full product.

Package the Proof

A buyer needs enough evidence to test the product before trusting it.

  • A sample with varied records
  • A field dictionary
  • Source and collection notes
  • Coverage dates and known gaps
  • A license and update promise

Decide How the Agency Data Product Sells

A fixed template can support checkout once payment and delivery are working. A finished dataset needs a current sample and clear license. A custom build needs an enterprise quote.

The dataset selling guide shows how to package those pieces. The dataset pricing page shows which DatasetsBuilder.com choices are available now.
